Baby loves Cake and I tend to go everywhere on foot when it comes to exploring the East End and it was on one of our daily excursions that I noticed Tom’s Kitchen had finally opened out East.
I’d been meaning to try out Tom’s for a very long time as I’d heard such good things about their Chelsea and Somerset House branches but for some reason had never made it. Then they opened up in Canary Wharf and it was time to take action. Sunday brunch with the besties it was, with special guest BLC as Mr Man needed a good run around in the boxing ring (that’s for another post, I’ve also taken up boxing in a mission to move cake belly, we’re talking the super serious stuff that you need a mouth-guard for~oooh!).
Why do I mention BLC in this post so much you ask? Because I was blown away by the service and just how buggy friendly the place was. Everywhere I looked there seemed to be kids sitting quietly enjoying things like mac n cheese, avocado, bowls of fruit etc while their parents enjoyed nice leisurely brunches over their Sunday papers. Yet the place doesn’t scream out “bring your kids here” and you can feel like an adult in a stress-free adult like environment. I think I’ve found where the local Bugaboo Mafia take their littlies to enjoy some quality food in a restaurant that is nicely tolerant.
The six of us arrived and we were seated at a curved booth with room for BLC on the side and enjoyed cappuccinos and pots of tea while deciding what on earth to eat from their nicely varied menu. We could have gone for anything ranging from a simple pain au raisin to granola or a full fry up, pancakes, brioche, avocado on toast, fruit salad, anything. This is a good healthy menu not only catering to those who wish for eggs (a major issue I have with brunch in London as I just can’t cope with them, it’s a smell/texture thing… anyway, some of us just don’t want eggs).
The highlight of this menu for me was the brioche French toast with caramelised apples and cinnamon cream but as two of my ladies were already going for that, and I was on a health-kick at the time, I went for simple avocado on whole wheat toast and a pink grapefruit. Others went for a pain au raisin, poached eggs on a bagel and a potato rosti with fried eggs. I had a lovely cucumber, apple and mint juice and pot of green tea which was refreshed several times.
None of us could fault brunch. I think it was up there with my holy grail of London brunches The Modern Pantry, possibly even better. A lot of this was down to their service – the staff are just so nice but not fake or in your face.
We all lingered for a long time and at no point felt hurried to leave. The decor was light, yet comfortable and there was an outdoor seating area which would be lovely on a nice bright day.
Will we be back? I’ve already met other members of the East End Bugaboo Mafia there for coffee since going with my ladies. Tom’s has stolen my heart just a little bit.
Tom’s Kitchen can be found at Westferry Circus. Nearest tube is Canary Wharf DLR and Jubilee Lines.
