What Are Gel Nails?
Gel nails are a popular choice in salons for a perfect manicure. Gel Polish is thicker and stronger compared to normal polish. To apply, you will need to apply a base coat to your natural nail first to create a sticky layer for your gel polish to stick to. Each layer must be cured under an LED or UV lamp.
Usually, after desired look is achieved, a sticky layer will have to be wiped away from the cured polish.
What Are the Pros?
- Durability – Gel polish lasts longer and has the potential to last for 4 weeks. It is less likely to break or chip due to the thick consistency.
- Protection – Gel polish can add a layer of protection to your natural nail bed to prevent breakage.
- Nail Health – Gel nails are healthier than acrylic nails. In addition, many people will use a growth/nail strengthening base coat under their gel polish which can naturally improve the condition of the nail.
- Dries Quickly – Regular polish can take a while to air dry, whereas gel polish can be dried after 30 seconds under an LED/UV lamp.
What Are the Cons?
- Removal – Gel nails cannot be removed with nail polish remover, therefore it must either be removed with a file, e-file or soaked in acetone. This can be timely.
- Cost – Due to the advanced polish and careful application, salon prices for gel polish cost more than regular.
- UV Light – UV Light to cure the gel polish can often be harmful to the skin and has the risk of skin cancer, as well as aging the skin on hands and around fingers.
